• What is Friends of Tuckerman Ravine, and what is its mission?

Working in partnership with the U.S. Forest Service, Friends of Tuckerman Ravine is a nonprofit organization that seeks to preserve and protect the historic recreational uses of Tuckerman Ravine and Mount Washington in the White Mountains of New Hampshire via educational and outreach initiatives. It is a 501c3 organization, and all sponsorships and donations are tax exempt. Each year, Friends of Tuckerman Ravine works with the U.S. Forest Service to help achieve specific initiatives from raising funds to educational programs to helping maintain trails. And, Friends of Tuckerman runs two highly popular pentathlons annually in the White Mountains, the "Tuckerman Inferno" and "Wildcat Wildfire" races (details below).

• How can one become a member of Friends of Tuckerman Ravine, and what are the benefits?

Memberships range from $35 per year to a lifetime membership of $850. Members receive Friends of Tuckerman Ravine updates, ski tickets and discounts from sponsors, invitations to annual events and a chance to participate in helping the U.S. Forest Service in activities that include clearing trails on Mount Washington as well as other initiatives.


•  How does Friends of Tuckerman work with the U.S. Forest Service ?

Friends of Tuckerman Ravine establishes specific annual goals (see press releases) in concert with the U.S. Forest Service to help achieve select initiatives that, due to federal budgetary constraints, need assistance, such as helping with infrastructure maintenance and educational programs on the safe, sustainable use of the Ravine.


•  What is the "Tuckerman Inferno"?

The Tuckerman Inferno pentathlon is open both to teams of five (one of whom must be of the opposite sex) and to solo TuckerMen and TuckerWomen competitors. The Inferno class has an all-women category open to teams of five as well as a Dynamic Duo two-person category. The Tuckerman Inferno pentathlon consists of:

  • an 8.3-mile run
  • a 6-mile kayak race down the Saco River
  • an 18-mile bike race north through Pinkham
  • a 3-mile run/hike up the Tuckerman Trail to Mount Washington's Tuckerman Ravine
  • a 1-mile ski/hike giant slalom to the floor of the Ravine.


•  What is the "Wildcat Wildfire "?

Thee Wildcat Wildfire Pentathlon is open to teams of five (one of whom must The Wildcat Wildfire Pentathlon will be run an hour later on a similar but slightly easier five-part course, ending at Wildcat Mountain ski area. The Wildcat Wildfire pentathlon consists of:

  • an 6-mile run
  • a 6-mile kayak
  • an 16-mile bike
  • a 2-mile hike/snowshoe up the Polecat Trail at Wildcat
  • a 1.5-mile downhill ski race down a trail to be determined based on ski conditions


•  What is the Steve Eastman Distinguished Service Award?

The Steve Eastman Distinguished Service Award is an annual award that is given to a volunteer (not limited to FOTR members) who exemplifies the volunteering spirit so ably demonstrated by Steve Eastman during his lifetime. To qualify, the prospective recipient shall have a selfless commitment to the Friends of Tuckerman, exhibit a love for the Ravine, Mount Washington, the backcountry experience and the environment in general, demonstrate character that exemplifies integrity, perseverance, creativity and teamwork. The award is given at the Friends of Tuckerman Annual Awards Banquet.


•  What is the Executive Director's "Go the Extra Mile" Award?

Awarded by the Executive Director to a Friends of Tuckerman volunteer who has "gone the extra mile" to support FOTR events, and/or volunteer work sessions and who, while acting behind the scenes, is critical to the success of the organization.
